RED PENCILS - I've been using non-photo blue pencil leads for sketching for many years now, which give better dynamic range than graphite, and they're not as messy. BUT, they are "non-photo" blue, which means the scanner has a lot of trouble seeing the lines, and I end up having to do a lot of image correction on my scans. So for a couple of years now, I've been looking for RED leads. I know they make them, but none of the art supply stores I've ever visited had them. They ALL have the blue stuff, but nobody has ever has the red.

I finally gave in and ordered some online a few days ago. They arrived today, and I can't wait to try them out! Meanwhile, I'm still practicing with my Wacom tablet, so it won't be long before I stop using pencils altogether...

Night Mistress fan art by Walfiend!
Got a pleasant surprise last week when Walfiend sent me this fan art of NM. It's dated 2008, which really mystifies me. I was COMPLETELY out of action all that year. Never made a single blog entry, or created ANY art of any kind. I didn't even have internet access most of that year. He managed to find my stuff, though!

Drawing with a Wacom Tablet —
I've had a Wacom Bamboo tablet (the cheapest, smallest tablet they make!) for a couple of months now, and I'm starting to get pretty good with it. It's been easier than I thought it would be. Sketching has come very naturally, but inking has been difficult. I've tried using Paint Tool SAI, a Japanese art software made especially for drawing. I must say, sketching feels very natural with SAI, but inking just doesn't work for me. SAI has a special inking layer that uses vector lines instead of pixels. While I would LOVE to have the clean lines of vector art for my inking lines, I find it very hard to control, and it feels very unnatural. I'm also having a great deal of difficulty getting the tablet buttons and pen controls to work properly with SAI, which is odd because I thought SAI was designed with tablets in mind.

So I'm using PhotoShop for tablet drawing, and it's going very well! I'm already used to the color and brush controls, so there's not much to learn. The tablet and pen controls work better, too. I've just today completed my first "all-tablet" art, and you can see it HERE! Everything was done with the pen: sketching, inking, color, special effects, ALL of it! The inking lines are the weakest part, I know, but it's gonna get better!

(Don't complain about not being able to see it! Just JOIN FurAffinity for christ sake!)

Chibi Ultra Fem!Art by Yuuri!
I commissioned this from her and watched her draw it live on her Ustream show! What fun!

Sketch of Ultra Fem - This was done on my Wacom Bamboo tablet. I'm starting to get pretty good at sketching with the tablet, and I may be able to start inking with it, too. This is kind of exciting!

The Scratch - in COLORFinally finished this new look for Scratch! She's a lot scarier than her 2005 version, but mostly looks the same. She didn't need much. Here's the ink version.
