FetishCon is coming! —
I'm leaving for FetishCon on Monday morning. I was going to squeeze in some drawing this weekend, but I'm really tired. I'll spend tomorrow getting ready to travel, and during the week while I'm in Tampa, I WILL be working! So look for more commissions!

Speaking of commissions, I'm VERY alarmed that only ONE commission sold this week! Last week sold out! What happened??

R.I.P. Peter Fernandez —
I just learned that Peter Fernandez passed away 10 days ago. He was the American voice of Speed Racer in the 1960s and contributed to countless other Japanese import cartoons and TV shows. Ultraman, Star Blazers, Astro Boy, Gigantor, you name it. Reading his obituaries, I only now learned that he wrote those awesome silly lyrics for the Speed Racer theme song, and came up with those ridiculous villain names.

So awesome!

The first episode of Speed Racer is one of silliest, awesomest things ever made. WATCH IT REALLY GO!!!

P.S. - I was just watching this, and I realized... Peter is doing ALL the voices! ALL OF THEM! (Except Trixie, Mom and Spritle.) Speed, Pops, Sparky, Ace Deucey, ALL the board members... EVERYBODY, for Christ sake! Wow!

Computer STILL Phucked --
I do NOT have Windows 7 reinstalled, and I have NOT been able to get a new copy of Windows 7. I've been running Ubuntu since midday, learning to use GiMP instead of Photoshop. It does ALMOST everything I need EXCEPT the couple of things I ABSOLUTELY NEED IT TO DO. Of course.

Ubuntu is by far the friendliest linux, but holy shit is it ever wonky! Just unpredictable and squirrelly as hell. I've tried every version of Ubuntu for the last 10 years or so, and they never get any better. Freezing and crashing all over the place, IF you can get it installed at all. You can't find the software you need, and even if you do, it won't run. Then there's the stuff that can't be installed unless you're a goddam linux programmer. (Stop it with the "log in as root" shit! Just STOP IT!!!)

So... Ubuntu is never more than a fall-back. I wish it was better.

Tomorrow I have ONE last thing I want to try, and after that... I just don't know.

P.S. - I'm not looking for advice, thanks. I got it.

COMPUTER CRASH!!!!! —
My Windows 7 computer, the one I use for art, has been acting wonky for weeks. I've been planning for some time to do a restore or even a re-install. Windows users are used to that, and I'm always prepared for it. I always keep backups of everything, and I even keep extra hardware. And I never, ever use my internal hard drive for storage.

So... I was actually in the process this afternoon of starting a full restore when everything just froze and quit. Normally, with all my preparation, this just means a re-install and maybe plug in a back up hard drive (which I have handy). Well, it ain't that easy...

The problem is, I can't just run a repair or restore from the various disks I've made because the hard drive that failed won't boot at all. Furthermore, my copy of Windows 7 is an UPGRADE version, which means it WILL NOT install unless the original Vista OS is present... which it ain't.

Now, I never throw anything away. The original Vista hard drive that came with this machine is in storage IN TAMPA. In other words, NOT NEAR ME. Ironically, I'll be in Tampa in 10 days or so, but that doesn't help me RIGHT NOW.

The only immediate solution I can think of is to buy and download a NEW copy of Windows 7, which will avoid similar problems in the future... but it'll cost like $200. That's what I'm gonna do, though. Getting started right now... (Just hoping this old Windows 2000 machine I pulled out of the closet will be able to burn an install disk...)

UPDATE: Yes, of course I made restore disks, and yes, I did make full system backups. They will not install onto the new hard drive and the old hard drive is fried.

'Pinnacle' preview —
Here's a sneak peek at some art I'm working on for a commission featuring The Pinnacle! In my last drawing of this guy, I made him look way too old. Like a muscle-bound Stan Lee, actually, and that's NOT what I want. He's mature, of course, I just need to refine my vision of him. This time, he's looking much better! I like this guy, and fortunately, so do some of my customers! (And so does Ultra Fem! Eek!)

'Predators' was pretty good! —
I was pleasantly surprised! The first half hour was just a rehash of the original movie, with the cast of Lost thrown in. But then it got pretty interesting. I liked it!

I do have to complain, though, that there were a couple of important points in the movie when the CGI looked like something out of Xena or Buffy. Seriously? You gotta spend your money on the interesting parts, guys!

But I still liked it!

Accidental Portraiture —
Online last night, I drew up a big commission piece, and I accidentally came up with a damn good likeness of a friend of mine named Isobel Wren. That's a close-up of the face on the right. Isobel is a pale, stick-thin white chick, but I'm sure she's always fantasized about being a BBW black woman!

I showed this to a mutual friend, and he said, yep, that's Isobel. Couldn't have done this if I'd tried. But there it.

The complete commission is HERE, by the way. (It's WEIRD!)

They Done Bo Peep Wrong —
I saw Toy Story 3 tonight, and the more time goes by, the more I have to say about it. (There are spoilers left and right here!)

ONE: As I've said before, and I'm sure I'll have to say it again, the modern 3-D effects are impressive, even subtle and beautiful at times, but they contribute absolutely nothing to the movie. They just don't. I had to pay extra for the 3-D. It's not worth it.

TWO: Disney is now doing to their theatrical movies what they've been doing to their home videos for years. Over the last decade or so, we've all become accustomed to bombardment by commercials before the movie. Not just movie trailers, COMMERCIALS. For cars, soft drinks, TV shows, even the military... and often the very SAME commercials we've already seen on TV. But the one thing that's never changed is that after we see the "And Now Our Feature Presentation" bumper, the movie we paid to see actually starts. Well, tonight I saw something different. After the bumper, there were MORE commercials for other Disney movies. And they were in 3-D. They were not separate reels like the other previews, they were part of the feature. Just like every Disney VHS tape and every Disney DVD, where you can't skip or fast-forward through the commercials, the theater can no longer choose to go without previews. They are attached to reel 1. That's Disney.

THREE: The short cartoon called Day and Night was very interesting and innovative. This was one instance where the 3-D effect was used creatively and integrated into the very concept of the film. The characters were drawn in a throwback style reminiscent of the flat minimalism of early television or UPA animation. Their body outlines acted as 2-D portals through which we could see living 3-D worlds. It was very effective and impressive. Leave it to Pixar to create something new. The action of the film was sometimes risque and violent in surprising ways, again like animation of an earlier era. Very much worth seeing.

FOUR: And here's the meat of the review. Bo Peep was gone. Just gone. In the first movie, she was the love interest, and Barbie wasn't there. In movie two, Bo was there, but a lesser player, and Barbie had a cameo. Today, Bo is gone and Barbie is the heroine of a major sub-plot. Her own separate movie, really!

Throughout the film, the toys stressed over and over how they could not be separated because they were "family," they needed to be there for each other. The ONLY reference to Bo, however, was a single line. "Some of us didn't make it... like Bo." An afterthought.

Here's what I remember reading about the last movie. Pixar had approached Mattel about making Barbie the love interest for the first movie, but they declined, not understanding the brilliance of Pixar and the huge hit they were about to create. Pixar invented Bo Peep as a Barbie analog. For the sequel, Mattel had to eat crow and ask nicely for whatever they could get. Pixar gave them a cameo, but made it clear that Barbie was NOT a major player.

And today... I don't know what happened. All the toys acted like Barbie was one of them and always had been. While I was watching the film, I didn't think about it, I just enjoyed it. But afterward, it started to sink in. Something changed. Bo was pointedly written out. Barbie was redacted in.

Oh, she was FUNNY! Her scenes were some of the biggest laughs of the movie, especially her scenes with Ken. (Cue Gary Wright's Dream Weaver.) Yes, Ken was there, and it was hilarious. "You ascot-wearing pink-noser!" says Rickles Potato Head. "You're not a toy, you're an accessory!" Brilliant! Merciless!

But there's a bad taste in mouth now. They done Bo WRONG!

FIVE: Where were the songs? I remember the other movies having good songs.

SIX: Was it me? Or was there something... how can I say it... oddly sexual about Jessie this time? I like Jessie, I think everybody does. But she's NOT sexual. When she was introduced in the last movie, it was with a sigh of relief (a least on my part) that we saw a non-romantic character, just another toy with owner-abandonment issues, another symbol of Pixar's unswerving dedication to doing-what-the-story-needs-above-all-else. She's Woody's partner toy, not relationship material. They went out of their way to design Jessie with no shape at all, just a flat cloth bag. She's NOT Barbie, and deliberately so.

But when Buzz turned on his Spanish language circuits, and became a sort of aggressive, romantic bullfighter who couldn't resist pawing at Jessie... she RESPONDED! It was weird. And funny. I don't know if I liked it.

SEVEN: What county landfill has an incinerator that's built like Dante's Inferno? The world of Toy Story, aside from the living toys, is starkly realistic. The whole dump scene was too much.

        EIGHT: Chuckles!

NINE: Bonnie, the toys' new owner, is something special! This is what Pixar does best. They can make you cry at will. And they DO.

Even with all this philosophizing, I recommend TS3. Go see it! Support good movies!

              "It'll happen, honey..." —
Here's a commission I completed last night. It's the latest in a series of "Cock-Milking Nurse" art I've been doing for a particular client for some time now. This time, he wanted the nurse to bring in a "redhead apprentice," so in my typical fashion, I made something both sexy AND funny.

"It'll happen, honey," says Ms. Nurse. "You wipe off and carry on."

I found a photo of that face online, just a random image. I knew instantly what I could do with it! This art was done very quickly, start-to-finish in only a couple of hours. The Tom Baker Game

There are, what, 7 billion people on Earth now? And I'm pretty sure I'm the ONLY one who's made this connection.

Last week, I was watching some Tom Baker videos online, then immediately afterward, I turned on my random song list and the first thing that played was Super Freak by Rick James. Now... okay, listen... there's a part in the first half of the song when Rick James uses this low, booming voice, and... well, a picture of Tom Baker singing it, in full Doctor Who get-up, came unbidden into my mind. There. Okay?

Play this MP3, and if you can picture it, you win the Tom Baker Game! The interesting part starts at about 00:47

If you don't know who Tom Baker is, and you've never seen Doctor Who, then you lose.
