Ultra Fem weekly webcomic

I'm working on a new web site with a WordPress/ComicPress layout for the revamped Ultra Fem weekly webcomic. Hopefully, strip #1 will premiere TOMORROW!

Access will be FREE, but PATRONS will get special perks. I will officially open up patronage in June. Want to get in early? CONTACT ME!

As some of you know, I started talking this week about a relaunch of the Ultra Fem webcomic. This time around, I envision it as a free weekly strip, financed by a Patreon-style table of subscription levels, with associated perks.

The idea is to reduce my dependence on commission drawings so I can spend time on my backlog. For those who don't know, Patreon is a new variation on the Kickstarter concept that brings the ancient concept of "patronage" into the 21st century. A large pool of patrons, each pledging very small monthly amounts, can show support for their favorite artists and creators, providing a more stable income and allowing the artist to create at will. It's not quite a "subscription." More like an "ongoing Kickstarter."

I was planning to launch the strip in May, then open the patronage in June. But April has been a very bad month. I am far short of my rent, so I'm going to try opening the patronage now as I prepare the first installments of the strip.

I've already spoken with some of my regulars about it, and there appears to be a good level of support already.

Ultra Fem. Nude.

Ultra Fem, nude. Showing off her abs and her boobs.
And her clean-shaven crotch.
I don't draw enough of these.

Copic markers

I was finally able to spend some time last night working with my Copic color markers. I produced a complete test drawing, and it's the most amateur-looking shit. Like a high school kid did it. My goal is to create some sketch covers to sell, but at this rate, it'll be a long time.

The whole experience has reminded me how much I hate working with paper. I was so glad to give it up entirely back in 2009 when I got my Wacom tablet, and I am not at all eager to go back. I like pencil sketching, but I've never liked wet media of any kind. I'm especially un-fond of inking. I have a new set of PITT pens here, and the experience of trying to produce a decent line has brought back all the nightmares.

What the hell is it with ink pens?? They're all the same. Dried-out, inconsistent junk right out of the box. To get a solid line, you have to scratch over and over and over. And the result looks exactly like that: SCRATCHINGS. Seriously unprofessional, no matter how much you pay. And NO, I will NOT use a brush. Or a brush pen. Or a crow quill. The only thing worse than a dry pen is an ink spill all over your desk.

I'm certain I will improve as far as the color work goes, but the inking? I don't know.

UPDATE: I have determined to use dark pencils for line work!
